Lupus was described around AD 900; however, the modern use of the term only started in the 1800s. Initially, lupus was thought to be mainly a dermatologic disease, but, by the end of the 19th century, it was clearly defined as a systemic disease. Since the 1940s with the recognition of the lupus erythematosus cells and the discovery of cortisone, the definition of the disease and its management and overall outcomes have improved considerably.
