Spirochetes: Leptospira

Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonotic infection with a much greater incidence in tropical regions and has now been identified as one of the emerging infectious diseases, particularly associated with travel and recreational activities. The epidemiology of leptospirosis has been modified with changes in animal husbandry, climate, and human behavior. Resurgent interest in leptospirosis has resulted from large outbreaks that have received significant publicity. This zoonotic infection represents a significant risk through contaminated water and food as a foodborne disease. In this article, different epidemiological and clinical aspects as well as its implication for food safety have been reviewed.
