Abstract
AIM: This study aimed to analyze research trends, visualization patterns, and publication dynamics related to silver nanoparticles in dentistry through a scientometric approach, thereby identifying thematic evolution, collaboration networks, and emerging areas of scientific impact. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following the reporting and measurement of items for bibliometric or scientometric studies (RAMIBS) for bibliometrics in health sciences framework, we adopted a descriptive scientometric mapping approach, in which we performed an exhaustive literature search in Scopus on October 6, 2025. All published documents from January 1, 2020, onwards, which were available on Scopus, were uploaded. We exported 402 records from 113 sources in steps where we undertook exports in BibTeX and .CSV formats. We analyzed information with SciVal for performance metrics and the Bibliometrix (R-package). RESULTS: The research area presented sustained growth with a notable 15.48% yearly increase. Overall, studies in this area attracted an average of 9.2 citations, 14.5 coauthors, and 19.9% involved international collaboration. Original research was the most common reporting type, followed by review articles. The Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (in India) was the most publishing institution, while the Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry contributed the most articles. The thematic analysis showed a trend toward more complex research topics from a foundation in material science topics (e.g., fluoride, chitosan), with emerging advanced topics such as green synthesis, cytotoxicity, and confocal microscopy. CONCLUSIONS: Research on silver nanoparticles in dentistry has evolved rapidly, reflecting the growing interdisciplinary interest and clinical relevance. The field is marked by high collaboration, diverse geographic contributions, and a clear transition toward biocompatibility and therapeutic applications. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Understanding the scientometric trajectory of silver nanoparticle research in dentistry provides valuable insights into emerging technologies, guiding future innovations in antimicrobial therapies, restorative materials, and minimally invasive treatments.
