Abstract

A wide variety of foreign bodies displaced in the maxillary sinus have been described due to the greater amount of dental treatments performed in the atrophic posterior maxilla. However, the displacement of dental burs is rare. The removal of these foreign bodies is usually performed with surgical approaches as Caldwell Luc, flaps, or endoscopic techniques. A 58-year-old man reported that a surgical bur was displaced into his maxillary sinus during the removal of his upper left first molar. Since the traditional Caldwell-Luc approach has reported some complications, we decided to perform a lateral antrostomy (modified Caldwell-Luc) and the use of a small magnet. Within the limitations of this report and according to the authors’ experience, this technique is safe, comfortable, and practical to remove ferromagnetic foreign bodies displaced into the maxillary sinus.
