Abstract

The dusky dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obscurus) is a smaller delphinid of the southern hemisphere, most closely related to North Pacific white-sided dolphins (L. obliquidens). Dusky dolphins tend to stay in nearshore waters no deeper than 2000m, and can feed on semipelagic fishes and squid at night in deeper waters and on schooling pilchard and anchovy in daytime in shallow waters. They are abundant in most areas where they occur, but are threatened by accidental and purposeful kills in South America.
