Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of the physical, chemical, and microscopic sediment analyses of urinalysis in cats older than 7 years of age, as well as to determine the statistical association between these variables and age. One hundred urine samples were collected by ultrasound-guided cystocentesis from clinically healthy cats that had not received any medication during the study. The variables considered were sex, reproductive status, breed, urine colour, appearance, specific gravity, pH, protein, glucose, bilirubin, blood, ketones, erythrocytes, leukocytes, cells, cell types, crystals, crystal types, bacteria, casts, and yeast. Abnormalities were found in the physical, chemical, and sediment analyses of urinalysis with respect to age, with the most frequently reported abnormality being the number of epithelial cells (>1 cell/HPF) (84/100), and transitional cells in 90%. Furthermore, 69% had a normal specific gravity. The protein and occult blood values were statistically significant with respect to age.
