Abstract

In the last two decades, the genus Aeromonas has undergone a number of significant changes, including that strains of Aeromonas hydrophila have been sequenced. Despite this, issues still remain regarding the role that Aeromonas plays in bacterial gastroenteritis, the extent to which species identification should be attempted in the clinical laboratory, and its current importance as food pathogen. Water and food can be contaminated with this bacteria becoming a source of risk for human infection. In this article its microbiological and clinical aspects as well its role in food safety are discussed.
